Diary Entries #3

December 14th, 1937

I went outside again, hoping to find my sister. Then I heard the bombing sound from far away. My memory of that trauma flashed back. It was about one month ago when Japanese first invaded our city of Nanking. The constant bombing sound filled the village. The planes were flying over our village. Even from far away I could see the red dot on white papel on the surface of the plane: Japanese flag. Chinese people were running around the street like crazy. I grabbed my sister's hand so that we can't be separated. Luckily I did not get hit by the bomb, and the bombing stopped after few minutes. But then the Japanese soldiers marched into the village, and since then Chinese girls like me were used for Japanese soldier's pleasure.
I should stop daydreaming and find my sister, I thought. Right when I decided to look for my sister I bumped into another chinese girl of about my age.
"What's going on here?" She asked.
"Oh hi! My name is Zhang Bai Zhi. What's your name?"
"My name is Xin Xiao Jing. What's going on here?"
"Is this your first time being around here? You're talking about the bombing right? Well, it's no big surprise for any of us. We have been hearing that noise ever since Japanese invaded our city." I answered.
"Japan? Where are they coming from?" Xiao Jing asked.
"They started their way to imperialize China starting from Shanghai."
"Shanghai? That's where I am exactly going to. Would Japanese be any harm to me?" Xiao Jing spoked in anxiety.
"Do you know anything that is happening here? Well, I don't really suggest you to go to Shanghai. There are full of evil Japanese soldiers looking for girls." I explained to her the situation in Nanking: the comfort women and the rape of Nanking. I hoped my words could intimidate her from going to Shanghai. I didn't want her to suffer like me. She only nodded to my words. She looked determined that she will go to Shanghai.
"Can't you see that Japanese are complete enemy of us? And you are a girl. They will seize you, beat you up, and do all sorts of weird things to you. You must listen to me. Don't head towards Japanese land." I warned her. But her eyes didn't move at all. She must have thought that I'm trying tricks with her. How could she be so foolish!
Frustrated at her ignorance, I left her without saying goodbye.
